Getting into the habit and discipline of reading

Getting into the habit and discipline of reading

Got this book as a birthday present from my Kid’s Church Family in VCF Ortigas.

I remember my friends talking about upgrading themselves into the discipline of reading, as application they’ll have to apply and share what they have learned. I could not recall if they were pushing for 2 book a week, but one of them said, that’s challenging for me, I’m not that bookish and at times don’t easily understand it.

But what strike me was this, one of them responded, saying getting into the habit of reading at start maybe boring, don’t feel reading,  it may not always register to mind. It’s pushing yourself till it becomes daily part of your life.

When I was starting to read the bible few years back, at first I said to  myself I’m reading something that i don’t understand, at times the word were too deep and has to researched what it meant it was a struggle. But Since I was pushing for four chapter a day, I just have to do it even if one chapter seems like the entire book or statistical data and numbers, as months past by  little did I know I’m falling more in love with each and every page.

That’s why for this year, for the next twelve months I will share one book I’ve read or maybe more.

Stubborn me

My cousin started to share about one  on  one discipleship it was twelve chapters back then, it is the basic essentials to following Christ, Which starts from Salvation. Lordship, Repentance and so on.

My cousin was a med student at that time, I still think that He would be a great theologian, His in-depth knowledge is good a reasoning, can speak really good to the point I don’t understand the depth of his communication skills, as if I perceive it as mathematics and all numbers coming out of his mouth.

We started with Chapter 1, followed by Lordship as next chapter after a week, but then my stubborn me and sarcastic nature towards my cousin starts to kick in, It took one month for the next chapter to be discuss, I felt force because I was unwilling to go through with it, after a couple of weeks before getting to another chapter he ask me What I understood about salvation, with brutal direct answer I said none, he was patient that he discuss it again with.

He would try to offer to discuss the next chapter but I would delaying tactics was on, I was either tired or just not now.

He was persistent in going through for the next chapter. I was challenging him every inch of his patience. We went through another chapter after a month again. This time I’ve butt in and ”said stop, I got the point”.  He continued explaining, out of nowhere to my annoyance. I said “you can continue speaking but my mind has stopped listening from you”. Me and my tongue. After a couple of weeks he asks me of what I understand about salvation, I said I don’t recall anything. Then he patiently shared the salvation topic the third time.

One thing for sure I commend my cousin; he didn’t gave up on me.  Jesus never gave up on us, He was simply faithful in loving us even if unfaithful.

Jesus is the greatest thing that ever happened to me. I’m  forever thankful for my cousin.

  • Christ likeness.

Before leading others it requires Christ likeness and indeed I saw Jesus Christ in my cousin.  He was patient all through out, He saw me on the angle where our lord is coming  from.

  • God was dealing with me

I’ve accepted Jesus yet my actions seem opposite. It dawn on me that pride and ego had led me to my sarcastic disrespectful behavior. He was working in my heart even if I seem happy with my behavior.

  • Undeserving

completely do not deserve this retaliation kindness, He was generous in very way, He was patient and completely passionate and forgiving. No matter how many times I would give him reasons not to disciples me, all the more he chase me.

In the same way it made me reflect Christ character, How love us, He endured embarrassment, humiliation, betrayal, torture, pain, and death, all be because of undeserving me(us)

We don’t deserve His patience, His love, but still he freely and willfully give it to us never giving up. That is who He is, that is his character.

Now who am Ito give up on others?

RHODZ: Sharpened

I met Rhodz in 2008, he was a student back then and an active volunteer in his campus, as he accepted Jesus Christ in his life that year,  he was filled with joy and was present in almost every youth service during Fridays and was very active in the ushering ministry and was willing to get know more Jesus through discipleship. Image

Here’s a picture of him third from the left.

Along the way in his active life, he felt confronted by feelings of rejection and offense. He then slowly withdraw from his  spiritual family. Eventually he was back to the things he turned his back, He tried to find acceptance in other ways. Living his life the way he wants it, filling his desires with what he taught was best. After 2 years, while he was was out of town with his friends , he found himself asking with what he has been doing in his life, living on regrets and guilt, realizing the things that he has been doing, has been robbing him of the joy he found only in Christ.

A  friend from church wanted simply talk  him and share the vision for the campus. At first he felt hesitant, but went on  meeting with  the friend. As the conversation went on, He remembered the time he accepted Jesus and and the great joy it brought him, realizing that God never left him but has been very faithful in his life, being blessed with a job  and a recent promotion.

Experiencing God’s goodness despite turning his back on Him, changed his heart, he started reading his bible once again and went back to Jesus Christ. Remembering his promises in the Bible. “if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new”.

Rhodz has not only renewed his commitment to his relationship with Jesus, in his commitment to protect this relationship he humbly opened his life and secured Godly men to be his accountable partners to counsel and pray for him, making time every week to learn more about God’s word through small group.

Now Rhodz is passionately  reaching out to the youth and influencing them to honor God  through dancing. He is actively involved in training  next generation that  will impact our country.Image

“As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.”   Proverbs 27:17 NIV

We need Godly men and women in our life that will continually push us to seek and pray to God, tells us the truth about us even when it hurts and builds us up to live that Godly life, pointing us to Jesus Christ. Have we identified this Godly people in our life? or Do we have them?
